WEST CHESTER (August 28, 2019) – Two airports in Chester County will receive more than $1.2 million in total state grant funding for upgrades and improvements, state Senator Andy Dinniman announced today.
“These funds will help our airports operate safely, while growing and expanding to meet demands,” Dinniman said. “They will also help our regional airports bolster commerce and attract new customers and investment.”
The funds, which come through PennDOT, are as follows:
- $1.1 million for the Chester County/ G.O. Carlson Airport to expand the public-use areas in the terminal building and make ground access improvements.
- $105,000 for the New Garden Airport to design pavement rehabilitation of the airport access road.
The Chester County projects come as part of more than $13 million in state investments allocated to 29 airports across the Commonwealth.
Funded through PennDOT’s Aviation Transportation Assistance Program, Aviation Development Program, and the Multimodal Fund, the new investments will infuse new state investments to expand aviation-related operational and economic opportunities statewide.
As of April 2019, Pennsylvania ranks 13th in the country in the number of public-use aviation facilities with 127 airports, heliports, and seaplane bases.
The Chester County Airport opened in 1928 as the Coatesville Airport. In 1959, Chester County purchased the facility and changed the name. That year also saw the formation of the Chester County Area Airport Authority, which assumed ownership of the airport, and in 1962 the name was again changed, this time to the Chester County G.O. Carlson Airport, in honor of the Authority’s first chairman. The 250-acre facility has a single runway and handles general aviation traffic only. It is the third busiest general aviation airport in Pennsylvania.
The New Garden Airport, also known as New Garden Flying Field, is a public airport located in Toughkenamon. The airport serves a large general aviation community, and offers maintenance facilities, aviation fuel, flight instruction, aircraft rental and hangar/tie-down space.
